MAC Nude Lipstick ($16.50 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a cool nude cream [with a Matte finish]. Its a medium-dark brown with a gray castalmost slightly rosy-toned at certain anglesand a matte finish. It had opaque color coverage, and it felt very creamy, even for a matte (which is different than a Retro Matte!). It lasted for five hours and was neither drying nor hydrating. MAC Shitaki is warmer, shimmery. MAC Double Shot is warmer, richer. Guerlain Giny is much lighter. Bobbi Brown Uber Nude is rosier. See comparison swatches. I think MACs permanent range may have some similar shades to this, but Im not miliar enough with some of the browner shades to say for sure, though.
Talk That Talk Lipstick ($16.50 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a matte dark plum [with a Retro Matte finish]. Its a deep, burgundy-berry with a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage that was somewhat uneven. The texture was dry, a little stiff, but about the norm for the Retro Matte formula. It was best applied (if you were going to use the tube) in quick, short strokes rather than trying to pull the bullet across the lips in a single, fluid motion. This shade lasted for nearly eight hours, but it was drying. OCC Black Metal Dahlia and OCC Black Dahlia are both similar in color with the former having a metallic finish. MAC SOulfully Rich is darker, less berry. MAC Heart Hangover is purpler, less red. MAC Prince Noir is darker, less red. MAC Dramatic Encounter is slightly less red. Chanel LImpatiente is a touch lighter. See comparison swatches.
Whos That Chick Lipstick ($16.50 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a mid-tone orange with frost [with a Frost finish]. Its a brightened, medium orange with lighter tangerine orange shimmer and a frosted, partially metallic finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage where the shimmer seemed to cover everywhere, but there was some translucency. This shade had a very creamy, emollient consistency. The shimmer is really what makes this different than other orange lipsticks, as the shimmer is at the forefront and gave the overall color a lighter look. It lasted two and a half hours on meit almost felt like it just slipped right off because of how creamy (but thin) it was! It didnt seem drying or hydrating during that short period it was on for. MAC Tart & came out in 2002..or soright after MAC lipstick spanish fly..(1997-99..I WISH they would bring that back ..that was the lipstick version of club eyeshadow! Oh and MAC hipster lipstick i used over my talk the talk in the pout to help the patch areasCAN You revamp a review for HIPSTER TOO? much thx. 🙂
Hey Layla,
I dont think I know of that one I didnt start buying MAC until late 2004/early 2005, so it was definitely before my time!
wowi started buying mac in 1992-3.wowso yeah whos that chick is close to SHOW OFFit was same tone, frosty, but it was more pigmented and it had that d-chrome effectvery bad ass lipcolor! too bad ..a miss out..lolso, whos that chick is like been there done that..ya know..well, spanish fly was the bomb ladies..it was club eyeshadow type color with d-chrome finish and those were both satin but frost finish at the same time:) THANKS much:)
Disappointed in Talk that Talk. Thanks for the swatches. I was hoping it was be bordering on black/purple. That looks more burgundy and the texture looks patchy.
Ditto to all the above. The descriptions made me want to splurge on all these but the swatches dont live up. Oh well, my wallet will thank me.
Aww I hoped these lipsticks would have worked, especially talk that talk. I got all of the lipsticks from the first time they released the collection, and they applied beautifully and looked great on the lips! If only they had this beautiful pink packaging.. haha. Man, Im gonna have to pass on these lipsticks. 🙁
Same! I thought it would be really dark but MAC Cyber is the perfect purple/almost black shade I think
yeah THE NARS TRAIN BLEU.IS GREATi dont need talk that talk.cause train bleu is talk that talk with rih rih woo pouted in the center for an ombre ll effect!
Hey Christine, I was just wondering how Nude compared to MACs Fresh Brew and Viva Glam Gaga 2.
Hi, Christine
Do you think this would work well on a NC42-43 complexion?
I can work Cherish with Rimmels Tiramisu liner, Half n Half is a little bit too pink and Touch is lovely but most other shades are too pink or just look frosty on me (esp. Mocha, yikes)
Dont know why Im looking for these browny shades lol I was also looking at Spice.
Yes, I think Nude would work! 🙂 I want to say if you like Touch you will like this. Same if you were looking at Spice, I think this would be up your alley.
Thanks! Im hoping it wont look ashy or anything on me. I love Touch but I want something a tad lighter. I was looking at swatches of Glamour Era as well but Im unable to test it because my MAC stores here are out of stock and they dont have Spice at all.
Just curioushow do you think Glamour Era would be on NC43?
Thanks, Christine!
Its such a bummer when you cant swatch these things on yourself first.
We may have different skin tones but your blog helps a lot!
Do you think Whos That Chick would be comparable to OCC Electric Grandma + Authentic Lip tars?
And I never desired a MAC lipstick before but Nude is GORGEOUS!
No! I liked the summer shades and love Riri Woobut Id love other peoples opinionsthese colors seem impossible for those of us with lighter complexions and hair to wear. Except Riri Woo,
Sorry if this comes across as harsh, its not meant to be. But, think of all the collections that come out that cater to those with light complexions. Just because you cant find something to your liking in this collection isnt a bad thing. Rihanna wanted these shades to work for her as well as her friends, some who are WOC. Also, in my opinion, women with lighter complexions can definitely pull off these shades.
I agree! Im irly pale and always feel bad that most collections are geared towards lighter skin. Its nice to see a collection that compliments more skin tones. Whenever really pale blushes and lipsticks that suit lighter skins come out only a few people can wear them. At least these colors can show up on multiple skin tones. These could definitely work for pale customers. You just have to be bold enough to wear it. Im disappointed by the quality, not so much the colors. If Talk That Talk were a better quality Id buy it. That Retro Matte looks painful!
If Talk That Talk swatched out as dark as the bullet appeared, I could almost see some concerns about that shade, but these all seem broadly flattering. While Nude might not be a nude for everyone, its, again, irly wearable. Compared to the Vivi Glam Nicki and Gaga lipsticks, these are amazingly wearable.
I think this is definitely aimed at darker complexions.I have a very light complexion myself and do not see any that would be very wearable for me but if this is collection aimed at darker complexions than why not?I too think there are many products that cater only to light to medium complextions and finally this is being taken care of if only just a little.
I dont think any of them except Riri Woo, which is gorgeous work on the lighter complexion/haired. If that was the goal then Rihanna and MAC succeeded!
I guess I just dont get it. If youd go for RiRi Woo, why Whos That Chick wouldnt be considered wearable, unless you dont particularly like orange. Nudes an interesting neutral shade, and Talk That Talk is vampy, but not crazily so.
If you dont like the colors, thats totally a different thing. But if you think you cant wear any of those colors because youve got lighter coloring? Youre totally depriving yourself of great opportunity, especially if youre already down with wearing a color like Riri Woo.
Ive seen all four colors on very ir skin tones as well as well as darker skin tones and they look bulous on everyone across the board Esp talk that talkIve seen that on a person with platinum blonde hair and very ir skin tone (NC15) and it looked divine! Ive seen it on a person with black/dark brown hair and with a significantly darker skin tone(NW45) and it looked divine on them as well. I think it really comes down to what you are comfortable wearing.
While I think these shade choices are geared more toward WOC, I dont think they are impossible to wear for lighter skin tones. They might not be everyones cup of tea, which goes for if youre light, dark, or somewhere in between, but I definitely dont see them as impossible.
This is a collection curated by and for a Black woman. Why should it be made to be wearable for lighter-skinned and -haired women?
One thing I love so much about this collection is that they named the lipstick simply Nude and its indeed a nude color FOR RIHANNA. It makes me so angry when only white person skin toned colors are called nude. This is a progressive and important choice by MAC.
Im not sure why the collection cant be wearable for any and all who want to wear something from it 🙂 The marketing for this campaign is global it is not to a single skin tone but MAC and Rihanna ns at large. MACs credo is all ages, all races, all es so lets try to honor that tagline, which is one of the best ones Ive seen in the industry. At the end of the day, its about what you feel comfortable wearing/what you like on yourself, and this is true with any and all colors!
Daphne I prefer the use of a real colorbeige, brown, taupe, mauve, etc.to describe what it is referred to as a nude since skin tone and color fluctuate, so what is nude for one is not nude for another. I wish brands would shift away from the usage of nude to color descriptions, because I dont think nude is all that descriptive!
I am crazy pale and love this collection.
I love dark lipstick and have often bought lipstick from lines that cater to African American women. I dont think any makeup should be off limits because of your coloring or ethnicity.
The Nude and Talk that talk are both on my must buy list.
I look at nudes just like any other color, wether or not I like it, and not wether or not its my (or anyone elses) skin tone.
No one would want to wear the chalk white/beige that would be nude on me!
I think other items in the collection are wearable for all skin tones. I do not think the lipsticks are with the exception of Riri Woo. Which is fine. MAC does perhaps too many collections and every one does not have to work for all. I would love Christines feedbackshe is better than me on this topicbut that brown in the nude does not work on lighter complexions ever. Nor do the really dark purple tones unless they are super sheer (Sweet seduction is great; or if you like a goth look). The orange is perhaps not workable on mostlight or dark.unless you like a really distinctive lip (odd on methat sort of shade).
I totally think brands should cater to all ethnicitiesand each collection should vary. But I still think MAC made a decision to tailor this collection to other coloring than mine (which is great; I stocked up on those retro matte lipsticks and paint pots and am frankly thrilled..money saved!).
Its about what you like on yourself I think really dark colors look great against pale skin, even ones as dark as Talk That Talk. Nude is going to depend on your undertones as well as what you pair it with. Some people dont like the way red lipstick looks; even if ten people tell them they look drop dead gorgeous in it, they feel uncomfortable and ultimately, thats what shows to them. There are colors others think I look good in, others think I look bad in, and ones I think I look good in and not everyone agrees across them! Thats okay 🙂
Im just a firm believer that you can wear anything you want its a matter of confidence and how you wear it!
Absolutely! Christine I agree with you. One thing your swatches help so much with is letting us all preview colors before we buy them. I mentioned Sweet Succulence.dark.which I love and looks amazingeven though Im light. I never would have bought it without your description and swatches.showing it to be sheer, which is why it works! And on this collection, with the heavier brown/burgundies and the orangeI know they wont work on me having tried like colors before. But I never wanted to imply that MAC or Rihanna was targeting any select group of people for this release.and I dont believe they did. What I like about MAC is how widely their collections vary. And Rihanna probably picked what looked good on herand they all dosince her name is on the collection. Still not my thing but bless all those who can look amazing in these colors.I wont be competing with you to get them before they sell out!
Oh, yes sorry, I didnt mean that it ISNT wearable for all skin tones, or that lighter-skinned folks shouldnt use these colors. I firmly believe that anyone can wear any color (though visibility of lighter or less intense colors on darker skin tones is harder). But its clearly geared towards darker-skinned folks, and it bothered me a little to hear someone say these colors seem impossible for those of us with lighter complexionsto wear as though it was a bad thing for a collection to be designed for those with darker skin in mind.
And yes, Ive noticed that about how you describe colors, and really appreciate it 🙂
I really like Whos that Chick and wasnt expecting to like anything from this collection
I thought I was going to be absolutely crazy for Talk that Talk and Im not. The texture looks really sketchy.. I think Whos That Chick is interesting and unique and I wonder if I can pull it off.
Hmm the only one I find even remotely intriguing is Nude. Glad to hear/see that its somewhat different from Shitaki since I already own about 3 backup tubes of it (its one of my ves). :0D
Minus the red, most of this collection looks better suited toward darker skin tones, so itll be a pass for my transluscent vampire self. 🙂 Its a perfect collection for Rihanna, though!
how do you think this collection is more suitable for darker skin tones? Im medium/dark and the nude lipstick would horrible on me because its too light, and not flattering on brown toned skin because its brown. It would look like I used my concealer on my lips.
I agree that the nude wont work for anyone, but thats true of all nude shades across the spectrum, which tend to vary based on personal preferences and features. However, the collection as a whole is based on shades Rihanna frequently wears and likes (she loves the reds and purples, thats for certain), so its naturally going to skew toward a genre best fitting skintones similar to hers as it should!
Bummed. I was hoping Talk That Talk would have been darker, and more on the purple side. Guess I will be going for Cyber this ll to fulfill that.
Im loving Whos That Chick do you think it would work on NW15 skin? Talk That Talk is a major disappointment.
I think Ill be getting a RiRi Woo backup just for the packaging. Here you have these gorgeous tubes and the most disappointing colors. Its a shame Heaux and RiRi Boy werent packaged like this. I really loathe these Retro Mattes. They suck all of the moisture out of your lips. Can we get an amazing Amplified collection from MAC? Id buy all those! Such a bummer.
Hi ChristineThanks so much for these beautiful swatches..I just wanted to know..How does Whos That Chick compare to MACS CB96?
There are a few here that I like, but nothing is too unique compared to all of the lipstick I already own.
